We will then suggest to you three German cookbooks worth your read. And just when you think we are done, we will get into the German kitchen, whip out our German cookbook and make a traditional German dish. Are you ready? Let’s plunge in.

What is Typical of the German Cuisine?

What foods do you think of when someone mentions German cuisine? If your answer is beer, sausages and potatoes, you are on the right track. Like any other national cuisine, German cuisine has attributes and characteristics that distinguish it from others. A typical breakfast in German cuisine would include sausages, bread and boiled eggs with coffee, tea or fruit juice. The Germans have over 300 types of bread, and the types vary with region. Pretzels, for instance, are in demand in southern Germany, while pumpernickel is popular in northern Germany. Lunch in the German cookbook may include Eintoph (a meat stew with carrots, potatoes and other additives), Schnitzel (boneless flour-dipped fried meat), or Sauerbraten mit Rotkohl (roasted meat with red cabbage). Despite the heavy breakfast and lunch meals, Germans occasionally partake in a mid-break or 4 pm coffee and cake snack, with the most popular cake being black forest cherry cake. Their evening meals are light, often comprising of bread, sausages, cheese noodles and pickles servings. As for beverages, beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage. The Germans boast over 5000 different kinds of beer, which they drink during evening meals, festivities, and other social gatherings. Coffee is the second sought after, followed by tea, and later, by local juices like orange juice and apple juice.

Which Ingredient are a Must in the German Kitchen?

Essentials ingredients that make up most German meals include;

  • Mustard – Whether for streaking onto pork sausages or stuffing on chicken, mustard is an essential condiment in the German kitchen.
  • Potatoes – The Germans are very creative when it comes to potato dishes. They can make potato dumplings, potato salads, mashed potatoes, potato pancakes – need I say more?
  • Sausages – The Germans call sausages wurst, and they boast over 1500 different kinds of wurst. Sausage is often the bedrock of many dishes in the German cookbook.
  • Meat - Meat is a staple ingredient of German cuisine. The Germans consume many meat varieties, thought the most sought after are porkbeef and poultry.
  • Quark – Quark is a type of soft thick cheese indigenous to Germany and other Eastern European countries. The Germans use quark as a spread on cakes, bread and bagels, as a dip in French fries and vegetables, and as a salad dressing.
  • Juniper berries – Juniper berries have a home in the German kitchen. The Germans use these berries to flavour game meat, sauerkraut, casseroles and marinades.

These ingredients play an integral role in the German cookbook. Of course, there are many other ingredients, but these are the most widely used.

The History of the German Cuisine

The German cuisine varies with regions in Germany. The regional variations can be attributed to the country's trade associations and war history. In the case of war, World War II left Germany divided into West Germany and East Germany. This division led to the two regions developing different food preferences and cooking styles. While West Germany continued with its traditional cuisines, East Germany adopted a new food culture from the Russians. As for trade, the southern region, Bavaria included, enjoys meat in most dishes, while the northern consumes more seafood dishes due to its proximity to the sea. The Eastern side of Germany partakes in more fruits, vegetables, beer and potatoes. The Western region, on the other hand, seems torn between pasta and traditional German delicacies. Influence by the French has led to the western side adopting foods like Maultaschen (pasta with meat and spices).

Closing Remarks

For most Germans, food plays an integral part of their culture. Germans truly take that time to prepare meals. They love to keep their foods hearty, traditional, and simple. Germany will keep reigning as the beer, sausage and potato kingdom of Europe. Feel free to try out the potato dumplings recipe. If you would like to make more German dishes, you can consult the German cookbooks recommended above.
