Ireland's Delicious Cuisine (The Best Cookbooks for It)

Irish Cuisine

Have you ever tried an Irish cuisine dish? If not, you are missing out on a lot. Irish cuisine is a cooking style that originated from Ireland and was invented by the Irish people. The cooking style is so old that it has survived centuries of political and social change in Ireland as well as interactions with different cultures from Britain and Europe.

Any cooking style that has survived that long is worth the taste!

Representative dishes of native Irish cuisine consist of:

  • Irish stew- it consists of mutton or lamb meat mixed with vegetable stew made from native Irish roots
  • Soda bread- it is a type of quick bread that consists of baking soda, flour, buttermilk, and salt
  • Colcannon- it is a native Irish dish made up of mashed potatoes and kale/cabbage
  • Coddle- it is made from sliced fatty bacon and sausages, as well as potatoes, onions, herbs, salt, and pepper
  • Boxty- it is a native potato Irish pancake
  • Bacon
  • Cabbage

However, in the early 17th century, the development and taste of the Irish cuisine was affected significantly by the invasion of Ireland by the Tudors. The Tudors introduced agriculture that was largely based on grains, and this made the traditional Irish cuisine lose its original taste. The taste of food in Ireland during this period must have been very uninviting.

Luckily, during the 21st century, the Irish people decided to revive their native Irish cuisine in order to enjoy its original unique taste. Now most modern foods from Ireland still use traditional Irish ingredients, mixed with other worldly influences to produce an artistic modern taste.

Amazing Irish cuisine food culture

Do you ever wonder how food from different cultures all over the world tastes like? Well, you are about to have an idea of what Irish cuisine dishes taste and look like.

Some of the traditional foods associated with Irish cuisine consist of breads, pork dishes, seafood, and potato dishes. Here is a clear breakdown of the Irish cuisine dishes:

The people of Ireland enjoyed making varieties of bread. Some of the breads include:

  • Goody- this is mostly a dish served as dessert
  • Blaa- it is a doughy white roll bread
  • Oatcake- it looks like a biscuit and it is made of oatmeal, flour (plain or whole meal), salt, and water
  • Potato bread- just as the name suggests, the dish is made of potatoes and wheat flour
  • Bairin Breac- this currant cake with a golden ring is eaten by the Irish people during Halloween
  • Indian bread- it is Irish native soda bread that is made with maize (corn)
  • Soda farl- this is a naive food in Northen Ireland and Ulster
  • Veda bread –this is a caramel-coloured malted bread
  • Wheaten bread- the bread is very similar to soda bread

Have you ever tried any of the above breads? The oatcake sounds very tantalizing.

The pork dishes that form part of the Irish cuisine consist of:

  • Bacon and cabbage- the dish is made of boiled bacon and shredded cabbage, served with mashed potatoes
  • Black pudding- this traditional Irish dish is made from barley, pig's blood, and seasoning
  • Coddle- the pork dish consists of pork sausage, potatoes, and bacon
  • White pudding- it is made of pork liver/meat, barley/oatmeal, and suet
  • Kidneys and skirts- this is a special native Irish pork stew
  • Crubeens- the Irish dish consists of pig's trotters

I don't know about you, but I would definitely try black pudding with pig's blood.

Are you a lover of potatoes? If so, then you would definitely love these Irish potato dishes. The native potato Irish cuisine dishes consist of:

  • Boxty- this is a potato pancake dish
  • Champ- the potato dish is made of butter, mashed potatoes, and cabbage/kale
  • Shepherd's pie- this dish which is also known as cottage pie consists of vegetables, minced beef or lamb, and mashed potatoes

Sounds delicious! Especially Shepherd's pie.

Seafood anyone?

Although Ireland is located along a coastline, the Irish people are not very fond of seafood. However, there are various types of seafood that have managed to gain favour with the Irish people and can be found in any Irish cookbook. They include:

  • Dublin lawyer- this sea food consists of lobster cooked in cream and whiskey
  • Carrageen moss
  • Salmon
  • Cod
